It was 1957, apple production was high, and the outlook for even greater future
production was bright. Local fruit growers saw an exciting possibility: With the right
storage facility, they could market their product well beyond the traditional fall sales
period. By combining their resources and partnering with experts at Michigan State
University, these growers pioneered the first multiple-room Controlled Atmosphere
(CA) storages in the state. And BelleHarvest Sales, Inc. was off and running.
Today, BelleHarvest is one of the largest fresh apple marketers in the eastern
United States, handling sales and quality control of Michigan apples to customers
across the nation and the world. And our commitment to deliver high-quality,
consistently superior products hasn’t wavered since day one.
We often say that we’re not a family business; we’re a business of families.
From our employees to our business partners, people tend to stick with us. Three
generations from one family have worked on our packing line. Many of our growers
are fourth and fifth generation growers, and we’re still working with some of the
original family farms we started out with 50-plus years ago. We’re proud of these
relationships, and those we’ve built with our many retail, wholesale, export, food
service, and process customers.
Michigan has always been known as the “variety state.” From Acey Mac to
Zestar, Michigan has no shortage of the many varieties that our customers desire.
BelleHarvest currently markets 18 commercial varieties that our growers produce,
with newer varieties on the way.
